VAJONT DAM’S TRIP

I’m really sorry that I didn’t post on the last days, but I had a lot of work to do for school, finally we’re at the end of the year!

The fist of June, here in Italy we were on holiday, so we took the chance to visit the Vajont Dam in Friuli Venezia Giulia. The journey took about three hours, but I think it worth it. I’ve already heard the story of this disaster, but when you arrive in front of this giant construction it overwhelms you. In a few words this is what happened: on the night of 9 October 1963 at 22:39, a giant landslide of Monte Toc fell in the artificial lake of Vajont and caused the overtopping of the dam and 2000 deaths. However the eingeneers and the SADE (the society who build it) already knew the risks about putting the dam there causede by the instability of Monte Toc. If you want to check all the story, you can have a look here.

This is what you can see if you visit the Vajont dam today, a bare landscape .

The pennants to remember all the innocent victims of the disaster.

The thing that really struck me were all this deaths caused by the deficiency of constructors, engineers and geologist. In all died 2000 people, 487 of this were children under 15 years and the ones who never born. And to remember all this people who died here, they hanged up all this pennant with name and age. I really had terrible feelings when I was here, cause the tought of all this lives broken up in a few minutes  was painful.

And with this article I want to remember all the people who died in the Vajont dam  disaster and try to teach to other that the memory is power. It reminds to man what he caused and not to remake the same mistakes. And also, that nature is powerful and men do not have to underestimate it.
